I didn’t EVER think I’d be so excited about bacteria…but here I am, a week after subjecting myself to my own version of clinical trial with AO+ Mist by MotherDirt and I’ve been converted into a true believer in the benefits of DIRT! After spraying my face daily for a week with Ammonia Oxydizing Bacteria (AOB) my problematic skin has calmed the f* down and looks fantastic! Please do invite me out for dinner, I promise I will shower 🚿 and I’d love to flaunt my clear skin out and about!
In the last couple of months I had heard several time about the Harvard scientist who stopped showering, isolated bacteria from dirt, and started spraying himself top to bottom with live bacteria (yes, no lack of weirdos in Cambridge, and no, he doesn’t take rinsing showers 🛁) Little did I know that same bacteria is in Phase 2 clinical trials for healing skin sensitivities such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, etc. and I’d be able to get my hands on a bottle super randomly in a bar just a few weeks later.
I won’t go into detail how the live bacteria mist works instead of showers, you can read all about that and watch videos on www.motherdirt.com. It is quite entertaining 😉 I’ll just say that a lifetime of personal observation has led me to believe that my skin is happiest when I roll in the sand all day on the beach or when I spend time close to the earth in Mother Nature. So when I was offered the chance to try something that is a saline solution of bacteria usually found in earth, I didn’t need much to be convinced.
MotherDirt ‘s website describes AO+ Mist as a live probiotic spray filled with good bacteria that improves the look and feel of your skin. Lament terms don’t tell me much and if you are curious like me (read: amateur science nerd – working for pharma companies will do that to you), you’d dig into the data immediately! MotherDirt products contain live Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) that feed on urea and ammonia (the bad guys on your skin that cause inflammation) and produce nitrite and nitric oxide (antibacterial and anti-inflamatory molecules). So you are basically healing your skin naturally by re-introducing the good guys to take care of the bad guys. Or as I call it “the bacteria that ate my skin problems away.”
AOBiome (the company behind MotherDirt) says: “Historically, AOB would have naturally colonized our skin, but modern hygiene, chemistry, lifestyle, and environment have wiped them out, leaving our skin more easily susceptible to challenges.” (See my reference to rolling in sand and frolicking in ocean water above.) There is difference between being clean and being sterile. Just like our gut needs good bacteria to be healthy, the same is true for our skin. In modern times we take probiotics for gut health, I guess we have to reintroduce live bacteria to our skin for skin health too.
